US GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE PARAMEDIC SAVES UK LIFE

AN American paramedic on a goodwill mission to the UK gave lifesaving treatment to a man who collapsed at the Church Inn, Uppermill, on Saturday afternoon.
Lauralea Thomas (30), a paramedic and firefighter, attempted to revive 50-year-old Brendan Gallagher who was visiting from the south of England. She worked with her host, Kevin Moore, a former hospital anaesthetist and president of Saddleworth Rotary Club.
Mr Gallagher had been walking with his family when he complained of feeling unwell. They helped him to the pub where he collapsed at the bar.
Lauralea, from Waukegan, near Chicago, cleared chairs and tables and stabilised the manâ's condition while landlord Julian Taylor called 999.
She is making her first visit to Britain with five colleagues as part of a month-long Rotary Study Group Exchange. Lauralea, who had been invited to the pub to sample an ale brewed in her honour, said: "I heard a shout and saw a man fall from a stool. I could see he was in distress."
"I just did what I have been trained to do. Kevin and I, and some of the locals, cleared a space on the floor to lay the man down and ensure he was comfortable."
"The emergency crew arrived and I gave them full details of his condition and handed things over to them."
Lauralea is one of three women firefighters who double as paramedics on the 117-strong team at the Waukegan Fire Department.
She has been in the force service for seven years and helped comfort families of New York firefighters who lost their lives in the September 11 atrocities.
"I just couldn't believe what was happening. It's my first visit to Britain and I never thought I'd be involved in a real life emergency" she added.
Mr Gallagher remains in a stable condition at the Royal Oldham Hospital and his wife, Kim, said: "I'd like to thank Lauralea, Kevin and everyone at the Church Inn for their kindness."
Landlord Julian created a special beer to mark Lauralea's visit. He also designed a pump clip with the words "LL Thomas. The ale that will light your fire"?.
He is now planning to bottle the ale and send it to her colleagues in the US.
