Bad Girls and Bond star Colin Salmon will today join Barnardo's at London's Ragged School, to launch a year of support from Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland. Rotarians will support Barnardo's projects and assist with fund raising.
A long term supporter of children's charity Barnardo's, Colin will have the opportunity to find more about the Ragged School museum, meet Dr David Barnardo the great, great nephew of the Victorian philanthropist and be served lunch by young people from a Barnardo's project, Dr B's in Harrogate.
Barnardo's, is delighted to have been appointed as one of the preferred charities for Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland fundraising activities in 2006/7 - a relationship which will involve Rotarians supporting Barnardo's projects and raising vital funds for the charity's work with disadvantaged children and young people.
Martin Narey, Barnardo's Chief Executive, explains "Childhood is an enormous lottery, and in Britain and Ireland many children's lives are in crisis. Thousands of children face abuse, discrimination, poverty, homelessness and disability. Barnardo"s is delighted to be receiving Rotary's support to help our work change the lives of these disadvantaged and vulnerable children. Only by working together can we help to give every child the chance of a childhood and a brighter future."
Peter Offer, President Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, added "Barnardo's is making a real difference to thousands of children, young people and their families and I am delighted that the 58,000 Rotarians in over 1,840 Rotary clubs in Britain and Ireland are able to help in the work that the charity is doing today."
The Rotary Clubs have been carefully matched to Barnardo's projects and retail shops in the UK and Ireland, to ensure that members can get involved in local Barnardo's initiatives - from helping in its network of shops and mentoring at its projects to organising fundraising events in the community. Rotary clubs will assist with a fundraising weekend on September 29/30th at Tesco stores, providing much-needed manpower to maximise the collection day.
