ROTARY MOBILITY EXCHANGE OPENS ITS DOORS

Source: RIBI
Date: 09/10/06

A new state-of-the-art structure, which provides an information point and waiting area for local people with mobility difficulties, will be officially opened this Wednesday (11 October 2006) by the President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, Peter L Offer, in the presence of the Mayor of Woking, Cllr John Kingsbury.

Known as the Rotary Mobility Exchange, the new facility has been developed by the Rotary Clubs of Woking and Woking District in partnership with Woking Borough Council and is an attachment to the Civic Offices.

The idea for the Exchange came from Woking's two Rotary Clubs who were keen to create a facility that would be of benefit to the community and a lasting symbol of Rotary in the Borough. Plans were drawn up in 2005, Rotary International's 100th year and a number of sponsors were found to help provide funding alongside Woking Borough Council. Work began on the Gloucester Square site in March this year and a special time capsule, filled with a range of items relating to the present day, was buried to mark the occasion.

The now completed facility is made primarily of glass and aluminium and has photovoltaic panels incorporated into the roof to help generate green electricity. Inside, it has a number of features including:

a warm place for people to sit and wait for local transport services such as Bustler, the Town Centre Buggy and Shopmobility, a user-friendly, computer-based information point, providing details about local groups and services access to toilet facilities.

Speaking about the completion of the project, Peter Offer, President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, said: "Rotary International has marked its 100th year in many ways. This particular project has involved a great deal of planning and effort by all concerned and it will be fantastic to see the doors open for the first time. We are grateful to all our sponsors for their generous contributions but would particularly like to thank Woking Borough Council for their support throughout the project."

Cllr Rob Leach, a member of Woking Borough Council's Executive, added: "The Rotary Mobility Exchange is a very welcome addition to the services that already exist in the town for people with mobility difficulties. We hope that local people will make use of and benefit from this facility for years to come."

A ribbon across the doors of the Exchange will be officially cut on Wednesday in the presence of representatives from the Rotary, Woking Borough Council, key sponsors and local disability organisations. Plaques detailing the sponsors and commemorating the opening of the project will also be unveiled before guests depart to enjoy a special lunch at the Holiday Inn.

Following the official opening, the Exchange will be open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday.
