THE MACKHAAN DO

Location: Glasgow City Chambers
End Date: 19/03/10
Source: Rotary Club of Barrhead

The Rotary Club of Barrhead invites you to The MacKhaan Do, a ceilidh to raise funds for the Yamaa Trust- a Scottish charity whose aim is to alleviate poverty in Mongolia. We hope to raise enough money to set up a school for deaf-mute children in the southern part of Mongolia.

Barrhead’s link with Mongolia - whose national hero is Ghengis Khaan -arises from one of our club members Ian McMahon’s participation in 2009 in a sponsored trek across the Gobi Desert in aid of Accord, Paisley’s hospice. Ian was moved by the plight of deaf–mute children in the Gobi desert area who have no specialised educational provision for coping with their handicaps.

The ceilidh will be a prestigious formal event to be held in the Banqueting Suite of Glasgow City Chambers on Friday 19th March 2010 at 7 for 7.30 .p.m. prompt. Representatives from Mongolia will be present at the ceilidh which marks the debut of the newly registered MacKhaan tartan.

Tickets costing £30 including a buffet are now on sale from Ian MaMahon or Ian Macpherson. They are selling quickly so please get in touch as soon as possible through your club secretary if you wish tickets for what promises to be an evening to remember.

Downolad application form.

The Insectarium

At the Insectarium you'll discover the fascinating world of insects.  It is a buzzing with life.  Beetles as bright as precious stones, giant stick insects, multicolored butterflies and impressive spiders will thrill visitors both young and old.  This is one of the most favorite attractions for kids!  it is a truly wondrous place where insects make all of the magic.

The Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens boast more than 22,000 species and varieties of plants and is considered one of the world's best.  It is a true feast for the eyes.  Covering more than 180 acres, it features 10 exhibition greenhouses and more than 30 outdoor gardens.

A City of Diversity

Montreal buildingsMontreal is home to 3.5 million people and 1,000 parks, with almost one tree for every two people.  The average temperature in late June is about 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  It is the second-largest French speaking city in the world, and the fashion capital of Canada.  Montreal is an eclectic city that engages the senses and inspires a spirit of joie de vivre .  You don't visit Montreal so much as you experience Montreal.

Culture

Over 80 ethnic groups are represented in metropolitan Montreal, including large Chinese, Greek, Haitian, Irish and Italian communities.  Within the city are many "quarters" (Chinese Quarter, Latin Quarter, Italian Quarter, Spanish Quarter, etc.) where you will find a concentration of shops, restaurants and hotels.  All of these ethnic quarters are located in the downtown area and are within easy walking distance of all downtown hotels.

Restaurants

There are more than 5,000 restaurants in Montreal, serving an impressive variety of French and ethnic cuisine.  Nearly every city block has something new and exciting to dish up.  Sidewalk cafes abound while the Main, as locals call Boulevard St. Laurent, teems with trendy bistros.

The Underground City

Montreal underground cityA veritable labyrinth with 20 miles of pedestrian walkways, Montreal's underground city offers 1,700 shops to explore along with some 200 restaurants and 40 movie theaters.  Accessible from the Palais des Congres, (the primary convention venue) it also links 10 metro stations and most of the hotels in central Montreal.

This is just a brief overview of the many aspects of Montreal.  To experience all of it you will need to come to Montreal in June of 2010 for the 101st Rotary International Convention.

We are looking for a great turnout at the Montreal convention.  Visiting Montreal is like visiting Europe and never having to leave North America.  There is something for everyone and it is a very family friendly city.

The only thing that will make it even better will be having you join us.  Register now and watch for future issues of this newsletter that will keep you updated on all convention activities.  And, visit all three of the convention-related web sites (see the Quick Links Box above on the left) on a regular basis to stay on top of all the latest news.

We look forward to having all RAG members, all Fellowship members, and all of the Devlyn Amigos join us for a truly "International Experience".

See you in Montreal . . . .

On 24th February the District 1230 GSE Team for 2010 departed for New Zealand, where they will visit District 9940, whose area takes in most of the southern half of the North Island.

This is in lieu of a presentation at the 9940 District Conference, which has been scheduled for May this year.

The New Zealand hosts have arranged an extremely full and varied itinerary for the team as they travel northward through Palmerston North, Wanganui and on to New Plymouth. They will finish their tour in Auckland along with a wide range of vocational visits organised for the team they have also arranged some more energetic activities, including a nine-hour trek over the Tongariro Crossing and a jetboat ride into the upper reaches of the Waitotara River. The program is so detailed they have published a 36-page booklet with all the information relative to the Exchange. It even includes a greeting from RI President John Kenny (Copy attached).

Baxterbear, who is fast becoming the most popular team member, will accompany the team on their travels.

The team have been very lucky with supporting sponsors. Slaters Menswear provided suits and polo shirts. Glasgow City Council donated a variety of gifts. Arran Distilleries gifted eight bottles of Malt Whisky and W Grant’s arranged to have a case of whisky waiting the teams’ arrival in Wellington. Both the Scottish Government and “Visit Scotland” have also shipped out promotional material and gifts. All of which should make for an extremely sociable and fun filled exchange.
