On the 14th June District Governor Catherine, 3 members of Past DG Drew and Sheilas family, together with a team from the Maggies Centre in Glasgow walked 26.2 miles through the night to raise awareness and funds for the prevention of Breast Cancer.
The Edinburgh Moonwalkers all 12,000 of them hope to raise £3m this year to go to local cancer care charities in Scotland. Maggies will be a major beneficiary of this as they are to receive funds to build Maggies 2 in Glasgow. So far Karen, Paul David and I have raised almost £4000 and we would like to thank all of our family and friends in Rotary for their support.
We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of Rotary Clubs and members and would like to thank you all most sincerely for this support. In the event that anyone has not yet had the opportunity to donate please feel free to do so on the attached link - justgiving.com/catherinestewart1230.
The 25th June saw DG 2007/2008 Drew Hughes hand over the chain to DG 2008/ 2009 Catherine Stewart - Rotary's first lady District Governor in Scotland. Around 220 people attended the handover dinner in the Glynhill Hotel Renfrew.
DG Drew gave a superb talk on the achievements of the clubs last year and presented a number of awards. Thereafter DG Catherine reminded us of next years opportunities to Make Dreams Real and reduce child mortality. Drews wife Sheila handed over the District Governors Lady's medal to Jim ( which was accepted with good grace but swiftly confiscated by the District Secretary - John Waddell to be brought up to date.)
The evening was rounded off by songs from the shows beautifully performed by students from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

"Scottish Golf at its Best"
173 golfers took part in the event on a very wet and windy day, Sunday 22nd June.
A team of young golfers from Helesburgh Golf Club just missed setting the record for the fastest 4-ball, completing a round of 6005 yards in 1 hr, 5 mins 49 secs, 1 minute 24 seconds outside the record. Another group of boys from Troon missed by 3 min 41 secs. Both remarkable times, considering the conditions and difficulty of the course.
The 100yard drive record stalled at 26 drives, which the organisers assured us is about the norm once the nerves kick in.
We won't mention the rotarian who fell short, but we will remind him at every opportunity, and we have the photograph as evidence.
This and the fastest Hole record had to be abandoned as the weather deteriorated during the afternoon.
The first golfers teed off at 07:30, in torrential rail and very high winds. Teams due to arrive by boat from Campbletown had to cancel due to the storm.
The last team holed out just after 10 p.m., almost in darkness and with no crowd to welcome them in…..
Despite the weather, everyone who took part enjoyed the event.
District Governor Drew Hughes said - "This event has raised the profile of Rotary and the "End Polio Now" campaign in the public domain throughout Scotland, and made a major contribution to the Gates Foundation challenge".

IMPORTANT - Every club in District 1230 has at least one story to tell. So tell it, and keep this site relevant and up to date.. If you have a story to tell, let the District Communications Chairman know. Contact details are in the District Bulletin and District Directory. Or you can send it to Stephen Malloy at his usual e-mail address and it will be done for you.
Tell your fellow Rotarians what you're up to and, more importantly, tell all those people who are trying to find out what Rotary is about. This website is the perfect opportunity to promote Rotary to everyone - not just ourselves. What we need are good stories and interesting pictures that will promote a modern Rotary organisation. We know we have a great organisation doing great things - let's not keep it a secret!
